The Submarine Habitability Assessment Questionnaire: A Survey of RAN Submariners

This paper reports on the development, method, and major findings from Submarine Habitability Assessment Questionnaire (SUB-HAQ) undertaken as part of a lessons-learned review current RAN submarine platform. The questionnaire was completed by 167 Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Submariners developed to examine perceived habitability main living working areas. results showed satisfaction with cleanliness, lighting, privacy amenities, ventilation in certain areas, location amenities facilities. also suggest dissatisfaction aspects work areas (such storage space for materials, conduct off-watch work), allocation equipment exercise, crowding, ratio crew amenities. Best use is an extraordinarily challenging design problem. However, it concluded that significant benefit could be achieved through applying human systems integration methods early future importance careful workforce planning crewing analyses prevent occurrences overcrowding, lack storage, unacceptable observed. SUB-HAQ have led investment evidence-based assurance RAN.
